انحصرت المنافسة على اختيار افضل لاعب لنيل الكرة الذهبية في مونديال 2002 المقام حاليا في كوريا الجنوبية واليابان، بين عشرة لاعبين من ست جنسيات مختلفة بينهم ستة من المنتخبين البرازيلي والالماني اللذين سيخوضان النهائي يوم الاحد المقبل.واللاعبون هم: رونالدو وريفالدو ورونالدينيو وروبرتو كارلوس (البرازيل) اوليفر كان وميكايل بالاك (المانيا) والحجي ضيوف (السنغال) وفرناندو هييرو (اسبانيا) وهونغ ميونغ بو (كوريا الجنوبية) وحسن شاش (تركيا).
يذكر ان اللجنة الفنية في الفيفا دأبت على اختيار افضل لاعب منذ مونديال 1982 في اسبانيا، وتعاقب على احراز اللقب كل من الايطالي باولو روسي (82) والارجنتيني دييغو مارادونا (86) والايطالي سالفاتوري سكيلاتشي (90) والبرازيلي روماريو (94) والبرازيلي رونالدو (98).
