رغم أن بعض الآثار العائدة إلى العصر البرونزي وجدت على قمة جبل ريفلهورن في سويسرا وعلوه 2927م فإن تسلق الجبال كرياضة يعود فقط إلى العام 1854. صحيح أن هناك ذكر لبعض حوادث تسلق جبال لأجل الرياضة أو التسلية رجوعاً إلى القرن الثالث عشر ولكن لم يكن هناك تنظيم لهذه الممارسة. وقد بنى هنود أمريكا الوسطى مذابح لتقديم القرابين على قمة جبل من جبال الأندلس وذلك في أواخر الزمن الكولومبي أي حوالي العام 1490 ، وأول سجل لتسلق جبل في الجزر البريطانية كان لجبل سان -كلد- حققه روبرت موراي سنة 1698.
