في ليلة 23 من شهر يونيو من عام 1972م كانت ولادة الأسطورة الكروية في مديبنة عشاق الكرة ( مرسيليا ) ، ولد زيدان من أبوين هاجرا إلى فرنسا من الجزائر وهو أصل هذا اللاعب العربي.
كان زيدان يعشق الكرة منذ صغره ، وكان يعشق صناعة الأهداف عكس أصحابه الذين كان همهم تسجيل الأهداف فقط.
منع زيدان من دخول مدرسة كروية في فرنسا بسبب جنسيته الجزائرية ، ولكنه سرعان ما أخذ الجنسية الفرنسية بمساعدة من أشخاص غير معروفين، وساعده هذا النادي لصقل مهاراته الكروية ، ومن هنا بدأت مسيرة زيدان نحو النجومية.
زيدان والملقب ب ( ZIZOU )حصل على أول بطاقة عضوية له مع نادي US-Saint Henri وكان هذا النادي بالقرب من المكان الذي يعيش فيه.
بدأت مهارات زيدان تعجب الأندية الفرنسية ، فضمه نادي سيبتيميس وكان عمره لا يتجاوز الحادية عشرة سنة. حقق مع هذا النادي العديد من البطولات للناشئين ، حتى أكمل الرابعة عشرة سنة من عمره، رآه رئيس نادي كان الفرنسي فأعجب به كثير وطلب من أبيه أن يوقع لنادي كان فوافق ، وانتقل زيدان إلى نادي كان ومن هنا بدأت مسيرة الإحتراف ، وبدأ زيدان اللعب مع لاعبين يكبرونه سنا ، فتعلم منهم كثيرا وأصبح لاعبا محترفا يشهد له كل سكان مدينة ( كان ).
عندما أصبح في السادسة عشرة من العمر ضمه مدرب الفريق الأول إلى قائمة الفريق الأساسي ، وعندها لعب زيدان أول مباراة له ضد فريق مارسيل دواسيي و ديشامب ( فريق نانت ) كان وقتها في 17 من عمره.
